Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary published by the Ministry of Education includes 288 religious terms, most of which are two-word terms, nouns, or terminologies in Buddhism. With regard to the attributes of this dictionary and rules of editing, it is suggested that colloquial religious terms should be added to it.
Zu Tang Ji and Jingde Chuandeng lu are two important Zen-Buddhist publications for the study of modern Chinese language, as they reflect the language-related phenomena from the late Tang to the Song dynasty. Based on these two publications, this research project suggests colloquial religious terms and their definitions be added to Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary. Additionally, this project refers to the two publications to examine the references of the existing 288 religious terms individually. If the reference of any of the terms provided by the dictionary dates back to a time later than the time of the two publications, this project suggests an earlier reference for the term in question. If any of the terms in the dictionary can have a better definition, the project also provides a suggested definition.
To lexicographers, the results of this project are expected to enrich the content of this dictionary. In terms of research, the results should facilitate the understanding of different aspects of religious terms through a comparison with colloquial religious terms in modern times. For the purpose of learning, the additional terms, definitions, and references can enhance teachers’ access to lexical information and the public’s understanding.
