Lin has taught philosophy (philosophy of mind, philosophy of language), medical humanities, and other humanities subjects. He has long been dedicated to higher education development and innovation. While working at National Chengchi University, he assisted in establishing the Center for Teaching and Development and the Chengchi College. During his secondment at Taipei Medical University, he founded the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. As Vice President of National Cheng Kung University, he primarily promoted university social responsibility (USR) and the deepening of higher education projects. While serving as President of Huafan University, he focused on innovating the future university system.
Since his assistant professor period, Lin has assisted the Ministry of Education in planning and promoting higher education innovation and talent cultivation. He led the planning office and provided funding to optimize general education courses and faculty for 90% of universities and colleges across the country. He also funded school-wide reform projects and managed national awards, boosting the morale of the general education community and driving the reform of general education. Later, Lin continued to assist various universities, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Science and Technology in promoting university system innovation, interdisciplinary education in the humanities and sciences, civic literacy, digital humanities, university social responsibility, local revitalization, teaching practice research, academic integrity, Taiwanese studies, and lifelong education in community universities.
Trusted for his expertise, Lin has been invited to participate in various university governance and strategic planning meetings. He has also interacted with government departments, industries, social enterprises, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), accumulating valuable experience in educational administration and talent development resources.
In summary, aside from his expertise in philosophy education, Lin's contributions to the field of education primarily focus on two areas:
1. Higher Education Innovation
For many years, Lin has assisted the Ministry of Education in promoting many important pilot innovation programs, such as the General Education Mid-term Curriculum Plan, Modern Civic Core Competency Development Program, University Learning Ecosystem Innovation Program, Interdisciplinary Science and Humanities Talent Development Program, New School Lunch Innovation Program, Higher Education Deepening Program, USR Program, and Teaching Practice Research Program. He has extensive experience in promoting national higher education policies.
Lin’s national higher education work can be divided into three phases:
In the first phase, Lin completed the establishment of general education evaluation indicators and procedures for top universities, reformed the core curriculum system and optimized courses in general education, innovated and promoted the school-wide curriculum map and student learning portfolios, established the National Outstanding General Education Teacher Award, and promoted action-learning/problem-based-learning oriented courses (AL, PBL). This shifted the focus of university education from knowledge delivery to competency development, centered on the learner and promoted a shift in education from knowledge-based to learning-based, and from teaching packaged knowledge to cultivating core competencies.
In the second phase, Lin promoted community-based learning, cross-disciplinary teaching models, and the establishment of academic communities, driving the trend of interdisciplinary integrated education.
In the third phase, Lin assisted in the formulation of the “Higher Education Innovation and Transformation Act,” promoted the University Learning Ecosystem Innovation Program, the University Local Social Responsibility Practice Program, and the Teaching Practice Research Program, and was responsible for planning and implementing the next phase of continuous improvement in national general education.
These experiences in higher education innovation and policy promotion have enabled Lin to keenly grasp the development trends of higher education both domestically and globally, allowing him to leverage and align with relevant policy directions.
2. Interdisciplinary Resource Linking
From National Chengchi University, known for its strengths in the humanities and social sciences, to Taipei Medical University, and then to National Cheng Kung University, based on its engineering school foundation; Lin participated in the establishment of the Center for Teaching and Development and the Chengchi College at Chengchi University, founded the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Taipei Medical University, and as Vice President at the top university National Cheng Kung University, promoted cross-disciplinary research and education in the humanities and social sciences across the entire campus. He also contributed to the creation of future university systems at Huafan University, a small liberal arts Buddhist university, focusing on university-wide autonomous learning programs and lifelong learning initiatives. Lin has been involved in national educational innovation programs such as the General Education Mid-Term Curriculum Plan, Modern Civic Core Competency Development Program, and University Learning Ecosystem Innovation Program, which he led. As a philosophy professor, a board member of the medical system, and a practitioner of university social responsibility (e.g., rural education, well-being culture, and local revitalization), he possesses years of experience in cross-domain integration, knowing how to connect resources from industry, government, and academia to generate synergies for problem-solving and fostering development.
