　　本計畫在瞭解英美加三國有關字典及百科全書之出版品特性，藉以探討其工具書之發展。透過文獻蒐集及字典、百科全書的出版書目分析結果，顯示英美加在字典及百科全書之出版上，擁有廣大之海外出版市場，特別是美國的出版量明顯高於其他二國。字典及百科全書的出版由商業出版社掌控，大型出版社占有出版優勢，採用POD方式之線上出版公司有相當高之出版量。雖然紙本與電子版工具書並存，但紙本版工具書仍占市場主流，電子參考書服務平臺成為新的發展趨勢。另出版商重視市場研究及行銷，使用者需求及成本是影響工具書出版的重要因素。

　　本計畫之研究成果是歸納出英美加三國字典及百科全書之發展趨勢，可供我國工具書規劃與發展之參考。本研究指出基於多數出版商對線上出版抱持樂觀態度，能滿足使用者一次檢索大量工具書之電子工具書平臺成為新興趨勢，因此檢索介面及檢索功能的設計成為電子版本工具書的發展要點，此項發展趨勢亦應是我國工具書發展的重要策略與方向。

　　This project focused on the development of reference books in UK, US, and Canada, based on the characteristics of dictionaries and encyclopedia published. The findings, generated from the related literature and bibliographic records of publications, showed that the publications by US, UK, and Canada have been distributed into broad foreign markets. In particular, the amount of publications by US was much higher than other countries. The commercial publishers published majority of publications. The large publishers dominated the publishing market. Online publishers using POD services reached the overwhelming number of publications. Printed and electronic reference books coexisted in the publishing market, however, printed books dominated. A new trend has been observed in the electronic reference platforms. In addition, publishers emphasize market research and marketing reference books. User needs and cost are two main factors for publishing reference books.

　　This project summarized the developmental trends of dictionaries and encyclopedias in UK, US, and Canada. We noted that most of the online publication publisher is optimistic to meet the user to retrieve from online platform through user-friendly retrieval interface; this is an important development trend and strategy for Taiwan.
