The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), administered by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), is an international research project has been conducted every four years since 1995. It assesses the mathematics and science learning performance of fourth- and eighth-grade students across participating countries and collects data on their learning backgrounds. Since 2019, computer-based testing has been implemented. Taiwan has continuously participated since 1999, and the results serve as an important reference for educational policy and instructional improvement.
International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS), administered by International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), is a large-scale international survey conducted across multiple countries. ICILS employs both test items and questionnaires as research instruments. The test items assess students’ competencies in computer and information literacy as well as their understanding of computational thinking, including problem-solving skills. The questionnaires are designed to investigate contextual factors that may influence students’ learning outcomes.
The implementation teams of TIMSS 2027 and ICILS 2028 aim to use this newsletter to enhance public understanding of these two large-scale international educational assessment projects. In addition, they seek to present and discuss the 2023 survey data released by IEA, focusing on the student competencies being assessed and the performance of participating countries.
